What is a dental checkup?
A dental checkup is an integral part of dental health. It provides an opportunity for your dentist to identify problems like decay and gum disease early and thus minimise treatment needs.
Your dentist will also perform a soft tissue check which ultimately is a visual screen for oral cancer. The decision to treat will always be made by the patient with the guidance of the dentist. At Carfax Dental we appreciate that all patients are individuals with specific needs and we take the time to get to know you and find out what is important to you.
What happens during a dental checkup?
The dentist will firstly take a thorough history from you. This includes questions about your general health and social habits like smoking and alcohol consumption. You will then asked to talk about any problems you may be experiencing and any issues that concern you. The history is followed by an examination during which, the dentist will look at your teeth, gums and soft tissues. The dentist may also perform an ‘extra-oral check’ to assess your jaw joints and look for any bumps and lumps on your face. The examination is painless and uses mainly a mouth mirror and some air to dry the teeth.
A visual examination does have limitations and to see in between the teeth and under the surfaces the dentist may suggest dental x-rays. Once the examination is complete your dentist will spend time explaining any findings and if you need treatment will go through options, pros and cons of each options and finally costs before any treatment is provided. We will make sure you understand the options and in cases where there is complex treatment we can give you a written treatment plan to take away with you to consider in your own time. We promise not to pressure you into any decisions you are not comfortable with.
Generally your dentist will not provide treatment at a check-up appointment unless it is an emergency and you require pain refief or the treatment needs are very simple and you consent to immediate treatment.
How often should I have a dental checkup?
Your dentist will advise you on the frequency of your check-ups as we are all different with varying needs. You will invited to have your say on the recommendation and we will make every effort to accommodate your wishes. The average check-up period in the UK is 6 months but this can vary between 3-24 months.
How much does a dental check up cost on a private basis?
If you are attending the practice for the first time or after a long absence the dentist will require more time to complete a more thorough examination. The cost for this is £60 including two small x-rays.
For a routine recall check-up performed within 12 months of your previous check-up the cost is £34.
